What is gua sha and how do you use a massage stone?
Gua sha is a traditional massage technique that originates from Chinese medicine. Using a smooth stone, often made of crystal, the skin is massaged in sweeping motions to stimulate blood circulation, promote lymphatic flow and reduce swelling. Many people find that the skin becomes more radiant, that tension is released and that the facial features get a natural lift.
The massage stone is not only beautiful – it is also functional. Gua sha stones are shaped to fit the contours of the face and body, with different edges and curves. The broad side is used for the cheeks, forehead and neck, while the narrower parts are perfect for the jawline, the area under the eyes and around the eyebrows. Some stones also have ridged edges for a more deep-acting massage.
How to use a gua sha stone:

Cleanse the skin and apply a serum or facial oil.

Hold the stone at a low angle (about 15° to the skin).

Gently pull in sweeping motions – always outwards and upwards.

Work from the middle of the face towards the hairline, from the jaw towards the ears and from the collarbones up towards the chin.
